Selection policy regarding genetic defects - Dwarfism - Hydrocephalus - Megaesophagus (esophageal paralysis) and aorta rupture	FR FR/WUR/UU FR/WUR/UU FR/DAP’s/UU/ Koepel fokkerij	In general, policy is aimed at the development of DNA testing. Stallions eligible for their first inspection would have to be tested for their status with regard to the passing on of genetic defects, and this information would have to be published upon the approval of these stallions. Mares could also be subjected to this testing. Based on the material that the University of Utrecht and the KFPS collected from foals displaying dwarfism and congenital hydrocephalus, a genome-wide SNP scan began to be developed at the end of 2010 in order to localize the defective gene or to develop a DNA testing procedure for that particular defect. Together with the DAP Wolvega, DAP Garijp and the University of Utrecht, a preliminary study was started into: 1) the prevalence of these defects, 2) the etiology of these defects, and 3) how these genetic defects are inherited. DNA material is also being collected for possible DNA analysis.
Longevity - Genetic parameters for longevity - Relation between exterior and longevity - Causes of death	FR WUR FR FR	In general, the aim is to obtain more insight into the longevity of Friesian horses and to investigate genetic parameters for selection. Research is being conducted, as based on data related to the disposal of the horse, into the degree to which genetics affects longevity. Studies will be conducted into the relationship between exterior and longevity. These studies will include how horses develop during their older years as based on the linear scores given for their exterior characteristics. A better method of registering causes of death will have to be found for the purpose of developing parameters for selection.
Fertility - Cryptorchidism	FR	Research will be conducted into the prevalence of cryptorchidism among colts. This inventory can also be used to determine the degree to which this defect is inherited.
Stamina	FR/Van Beckhaven	Heart rate and lactate levels are being measured during ABFP tests to gain insight into the phenotypic and genetic aspects of stamina in the Friesian horse.
Digital movement analysis	FR/UU/Rosmark Consultancy	Studies are being conducted to see if systems for the digital recording of movement can be applied as a tool for assessing the movement of the Friesian horse. One of the systems being studies is called Pegasus.
